Strempel and Handel are back as editors of the second volume in this series. While the first book focuses on promising transfer practices from practitioners, this book presents recent transfer-related research studies. The included studies provide an in-depth look at the transfer student experience from a range of theoretical and methodological perspectives and provide practical recommendations for practitioners, administrators, policy-makers, and researchers. 

Transition and Transformation: Fostering Transfer Student Success (2016)

Stephen J. Handel & Eileen Strempel (Eds.)

This book highlights the experience of practitioners involved in the day-to-day work of serving students in a variety of institutional contexts: public and private, two-year and four-year. The three main sections: strategic planning, curricular innovations, and outreach and advising discuss a broad range of topics relevant to transfer professionals.

Tracking Transfer: New Measures of Institutional and State Effectiveness in Helping Community College Students Attain Bachelor’s Degrees (2016)

Davis Jenkins & John Fink

The authors of this report analyzed data from the National Student Clearinghouse for over 700,000 degree-seeking students who started at a community college. They defined common metrics for transfer student success including: transfer-out rate, transfer-with-award rate, and transfer-out bachelor’s completion rate. The report breaks out these outcomes by state, in comparison with the national rates.

The Transfer Playbook: Essential Practices for Two- and Four-Year Colleges (2016)

Joshua Wyner, KC Dean, Davis Jenkins & John Fink

The playbook from the Community College Research Center and the Aspen Institute offers recommendations to both policymakers and front-line practitioners for improving transfer now, and guidance on issues needing more attention in the future. The findings and recommendations in this report point to the need for more systemic changes in our national tracking systems and accountability structures to provide more effective incentives to both two- and four-year institutions to support transfer students.

Collegiate Transfer: Navigating the New Normal (2013)

Janet L. Marling (Ed.)

This New Directions for Higher Education publication examines the increasing prevalence of the transfer pathway for degree completion and provides recommendations for professionals and policy makers. The authors, experts from a range of perspectives in higher education, offer a broad range of strategies to facilitate bachelor degree completion for transfer students.
